Coping with Danger and Deception: Lessons from Signal Detection Theory

چکیده

Signal detection theory (SDT) has been used to model optimal stimulus discrimination for more than four decades in evolutionary ecology. A popular standard that maximizes payoff per encounter was recently criticized being too simplistic, leading erroneous predictions. We review a number of SDT models have received less attention but explicitly taken repeated encounters into account, focusing on prey choice, mate search, aggressive mimicry, and the aiding kin. show how these can be seen as variants second analyzed unified framework. In contrast simpler model, this higher probability an undesirable or dangerous event occurring may either decrease increase receiver’s acceptance rates. each instance, latter outcome requires events relative rather absolute sense. Increasing abundance desirable signalers from accepting them also raise reduce Our synthesis highlights fundamental similarities among previously studied case-by-case basis challenges some long-held beliefs. For example, classic predictions Batesian mimicry reversed when are protected by low profitability harmful defense.

Coping with Deception

We have implemented a test-bed with agents who collaborate and communicate, potentially with deceptive information. Agents range from benevolent to selfish. They also have differing trustworthiness levels. Deception handling can vary from agents with mood swings about being deceived, to agents who react minimally to being deceived. We show the effects of different trustworthiness values in diff...

Boundary extension: Insights from signal detection theory.

After viewing a scene, people often remember having seen more of the world than was originally visible, an error referred to as boundary extension. Despite the large number of studies on this phenomenon, performance has never been considered in terms of signal detection theory (SDT). We report two visual memory experiments that allowed us to explore boundary extension in terms of SDT. In our ex...

Individual Differences in Deception and Deception Detection

We are building a new corpus of deceptive and nondeceptive speech, using American English and Mandarin Chinese adult native speakers, to investigate individual and cultural differences in acoustic, prosodic, and lexical cues to deception. Here, we report on the role of personality factors using the NEO-FFI (Neuroticism-Extraversion-Openness Five Factor Inventory), gender, ethnicity and confiden...

The case for pain neuroimaging in the courtroom: lessons from deception detection

From an observer's perspective, pain is a fairly nebulous concept-it is not externally visible, its cause is not obvious, and perceptions of its intensity are mainly subjective. If difficulties in understanding the source and degree of pain are troublesome in contexts requiring social empathy, they are especially problematic in the legal setting. Tort law applies to both acute and chronic pain ...
